You Will Be Responsible For:

•         Understands the Computerized Physician Order Entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

•         Understands computer downtime procedures

•         Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

•         In addition to specific job duties listed performs other duties as assigned.


•         Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate acute and chronic wounds, fistulae, GI/GU continent and cutaneous ostomies, and urinary/fecal incontinence care for appropriate patients

•         Communicate with physicians in matters relating to wound care of patients in the hospital and home setting

•         Planning of outpatient wound care, to include obtaining orders from physicians and follow-up with physicians.

•         Inpatient and outpatient consulting as patients are referred as part of coordination of care, which includes marking of permanent colostomy sites

•         Perform pre and post-op ostomy teaching and follow-up education for as needed for ostomy patients and their families or significant others

•         Assure specialty beds and overlays are used appropriately

•         Assist in the coordinating Skin and Wound care to help perform daily skin rounds

•         Participate in Quarterly prevalence pressure ulcer studies and reports results to Risk Manager and Nursing Leadership

•         Review charts for documentation showing that the nurses are performing the Braden Scale Skin assessment every 24 hours and assure that identified skin problems are addressed appropriately and reports this information in prevalence study reports

•         Attend Case Management meetings as needed, to identify any patients who may require assessment for any problems relating to skin and wound care

•         Provide/recommend wound care to patients using national wound care standards including wound vacs and other tools as appropriate

•         Educate staff on care/use/indication of wound vac and existing wound care

•         Comply with all department policies and procedures, practices, and standards of care

•         Responsible for insuring own clinical competence by maintaining professional and clinical skills through attendance at staff development meetings, pertinent educational activities, and professional affiliations.  Keeps abreast of current trends and research relating to wound care

•         In addition to specific job duties listed performs other duties as assigned


•         Inserts PICC line catheters, determines placement via Ultrasound follow-up and documents the procedure

•         Assists staff by monitoring PICC, declotting, performing drug charges and discontinuing catheters with or without catheter tip cultures.

•         Assists with difficult peripheral I.V. insertions

•         Plans, evaluates and implements interventions for solving I.V. related patient care problems

•         Provides I.V. therapy instruction and/or information to nursing staff, students, physicians, patients and their families


What You Will Need:

•      Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Current license as Registered Nurse in the state of Texas.

•     Wound care experience. Two years of related experience and/or training. 

•     Current certificate in CPR from the AHA.

•     Proficient/Competent in PICC line insertion within 6 months of hire using training and standards set forth to obtain.

•     Wound Certification in Wound/Ostomy Care either by WOCNCB or National Alliance of Wound Care “WCC”

Job Summary:

To provide wound and ostomy care expertise to hospitalized patients in accordance with their specialized wound care needs and to assist in directing the activities of the nursing staff in the provision of wound care according to national wound care standards and Central Texas Medical Center.

To provide proficient, age specific, professional skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients for PICC line placement and PICC line maintenance in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and established standards of nursing care and practice..

Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and treats staff, physician, patients and families with consideration and respect.

Knowledge and Skills Required:      

•         Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

•         Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

•         Effective communication among employees, and between employees, patients, visitors and supervisors is essential to ensure quality patient care and to avoid misunderstanding, errors and miscommunications which could have a detrimental effect on the health, safety and well-being of patients and co-workers.  In addition to these communication and safety concerns, individuals in this position must be able to effectively review patient and related medical records, understand nurse and/or physician verbal and written instructions, read labels of medications, read safety information, and hazardous chemicals.  Therefore, to prevent misunderstandings, errors, and miscommunications in the provision of quality patient care and other job-related services, employees in this position are required to have the capability of fluently speaking, reading, and writing English.

•         Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

•         Knowledge of the Nursing Process, treatment and diagnostic methods for patients throughout the age spectrum.

•         Effective interpersonal and patient contact skills.

•         Ability to initiate, keep and maintain legible, accurate, concise patient records. 

•         Demonstrate baseline competency in all areas of the indicated skills checklists and age specific competency. 

•         Effective interpersonal and patient contact skills.

•         Basic computer software programs such as MS Outlook, Office, and Word
