Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time / Days

You Will Be Responsible For:

•         Will follow the Joint Commission Standards, AORN and CDC guidelines.

•         Provides for safe care in the Operating Room, by continuous patient assessment.

•         Verifies accuracy of each chart before surgery for complete consent, lab work, history and physical, identify patient and type of surgery, and checks allergies of patient.

•         Position patient for surgery using proper alignment and padding, assist anesthesia, maintain patient's privacy and ensure patient is clean, dry and warm before transporting in a safe manner from Pre-OP or to PACU at the end of the procedure.

•         Initiate the time out for all procedures by following time out policy requiring all present to actively communicate. 

•         Monitor patients having local anesthesia according to policy and procedure.

•         Recognizes potential emergency/life threatening situations and initiates appropriate action.

•         Administers medication in accordance with hospital policy.

•         Demonstrates competence and knowledge of aseptic techniques and surgical procedures to ensure a safe environment free from infection.

•         Complies with policy and procedures regarding aseptic technique.

•         Demonstrates knowledge in the use of instruments and equipment necessary for a procedure.

•         Performs proper sponge, needle and instrument counts per OR policy; documents appropriately.

•         Uses correct technique when doing preps.

•         Alert to the progression of every case, communicating needs to front desk, and sending for next patient on a timely basis.

•         Accurately documents patient charges.

•         Demonstrates competent communication, both written and oral, of pertinent patient information to ensure appropriate documentation and communication with staff and physicians.

•         Documents accurately on each case, completing the charting prior to starting another case whenever possible.

•         Reports and documents all incidents within 24 hours.

•         Communicates through hand-off report to receiving unit upon their transfer from the operating room.

•         Gives an accurate hand-off report when being relieved of duty.

•         Communicates effectively and frequently with team members to share information, anticipate needs and solve problems in a positive manner.

•         Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrated quality and effectiveness in work habits and treat staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect.

•         Understands the Computerized Physician Order entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

•         Understands computer downtime procedures.

•         Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

•         Performs all duties relating to Real Time Scanning accurately and efficiently.

•         Performs all other duties as assigned.


What You Will Need:

•         Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

•         Currently licensed to practice as an RN in the state of Texas or in a qualifying compact state.

•         Previous OR experience is preferred.

Job Summary:

The OR Staff RN practices as a professional nurse within the limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.  Circulates and scrubs on all types of surgery cases, utilizing skills, knowledge and nursing process to ensure the quality of care provided and in harmony with the philosophy, goals and policies of the Nursing Department and hospital administration.  May function as the scrub nurse as experience allows.  Must be able to communicate with doctors, patients, staff, other nurses and medical personnel.  Must be able to document assessments and evaluation of patients and care given.  Must be able to function independently, efficiently and as a member of the hospital team.
