Our 178-bed hospital includes a Level IV Emergency and Trauma Center, Women’s Center, Level II NICU, Sleep Improvement Center, Institute for Advanced Wound Care Healing, Rehabilitation Institute, home health and hospice care. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:



•         Records medical histories and assesses patients’ needs.


•         Initiates the nursing plan of care and implements the initial procedural teaching. 


•         Determines the appropriate diagnostic testing needs by utilizing anesthesia protocol and consulting anesthesiologists.   


•         Prepares patients for procedures by:


•         Proficiently starting IVs


•         Administering required medication 


•         Provides emotional support to patients and families as needed.


•         Provides accurate documentation and patient charges.


•         Provides post-operative instructions and discharge information to patients and family members.


•         Follows all departmental policies to provide quality care to patients and courtesy to coworkers. 


•         Inspects work areas for readiness for each patient. 


•         Provides safety for patients and coworkers according to hospital policy and procedures. 


•         Reports malfunctioning equipment to evaluator in a timely manner. 


•         Develops self professionally and participates in department activities. 


•         Works with coworkers both within the department and throughout the hospital in a professional manner.


•         Participates in the continuous improvement process.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

•         Effective communication among employees, and between employees, patients, visitors and supervisors is essential to ensure quality patient care and to avoid misunderstanding, errors and miscommunications which could have a detrimental effect on the health, safety and well-being of patients and co-workers.  In addition to these communication and safety concerns, individuals in this position must be able to effectively review patient and related medical records, understand nurse and/or physician verbal and written instructions, read labels of medications, read safety information, and hazardous chemicals.  Therefore, to prevent misunderstandings, errors, and miscommunications in the provision of quality patient care and other job-related services, employees in this position are required to have the capability of fluently speaking, reading, and writing English.


•         Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


•         Must have some knowledge and experience in performing the duties associated with:


•         Knowledge of ASPAN standards, and peri-operative nursing care protocol. 


•         Demonstrates ability to perform proficient IV skills and airway management.


•         Ability to keep neat, accurate, and concise records.


•         Effective interpersonal and patient contact skills.


•         Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic agents, conscious sedation and reversal agents.


•         Able to function in designated work areas within the identified areas of Surgical Services


•         Able to anticipate the needs of co-workers and patients


•         Ability to perform CPR


•         Must have some computer experience, working with a healthcare software computer system is desirable.


•         Must be able to work in a fast-paced and customer service-oriented environment; to perform duties under pressure and meet deadlines in a timely manner; to work as part of a team as well as to complete assignments independently; to take instruction from supervisors; to exercise problem-solving skills; and to interact with co-workers, supervisors, guest, patients and the public in a professional and pleasant manner.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



•         Graduate from an accredited school of nursing


•         Six months to one year related experience and/or training. 


•         Graduate of an accredited school of nursing


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:



•         Current license as an RN in the state of Texas.


•         Current certificate in BCLS from the AHA.


•         Certificate in ACLS within 6 months of hire.


•         Certificate in PALS within one year from hire.
