PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares operative sight for the surgical procedure.
  • Functions as the role of Scrub Nurse upon proven competency.
  • Prepares operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Provides complete and accurate nursing records on charts, log books, and implant records.
  • Provides accurate patient charges.
  • Updates patient care in response to monitored events.
  • Assists the anesthesia care provider during induction, intubation, and emergence from anesthesia.
  • Positions patient to optimize the surgical procedures and maintain patient safety.
  • Directs the plan of care in the operating room.
  • Creates a patient focused care plan in response to patient needs, nursing assessment, and physician’s orders.
  • Directs plan of care in the operating room.
  • Performs accurate sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.
  • Sets up, tests, and connects all specialty equipment.
  • Participates in the trial of new products and equipment.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:


•  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical  inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


•  Knowledge of AORN standards and perioperative nursing care.


•  Demonstrates ability to perform proficient IV skills and airway management.


•  Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic agents, conscious sedation and reversal agents.


•  Able to function in the designated work areas within the identified areas of Surgical Services.


•  Must have some computer experience, working with a healthcare software computer system is desirable.


• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. All lifting and/or moving greater than 20 pounds must be made with assistance and/or the appropriate lifting and moving equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


•  Must be able to work in a fast-paced and customer service-oriented environment; to perform duties under pressure and meet deadlines in a timely manner; to work as part of a team as well as to complete assignments independently; to take instruction from supervisors; to exercise problem-solving skills; and to interact with co-workers, supervisors, guest, patients and the public in a professional and pleasant manner.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

Be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and six months to one year related experience and/or training.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred.

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

1) Must hold a current certificate in BCLS from the American Heart Association.


•      2) Must obtain and hold, within 6 months of hire, a current certificate in ACLS if RN takes Circulator Call.


•      3) Must hold a current license or be eligible for license as an RN in the state of Texas.
