Job Description

Respiratory Therapist
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Respiratory Therapist, practicing under the clinical direction of the physicians and administrative direction of the Practice Leader, provides appropriate care, evaluation and treatment for patients with breathing and/or cardiopulmonary disorders.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Administers breathing and oxygen procedures such as nebulizer treatments
  2. Prepares and tests devices used such as pulmonary equipment, breathing devices and oxygen supply
  3. Sets equipment controls to regulate the flow of oxygen and gases
  4. Administers prescribed medications & treatments; documents appropriately and completely
  5. Assesses patients’ response to treatments and modifies treatment if necessary; monitors patients during treatments and reports any unusual reactions to physician or appropriate staff members
  6. Maintains medication safely by monitoring refrigerator and freezer temperatures and dating multi-dose vials when opened; ensures that no expired medications are available for use
  7. Cleans, sterilizes, checks and maintains respiratory therapy equipment
 
 
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of health care field and medical terminology
  • Expertise in patient advocacy and navigating complex systems
  • Ability to function and assist others in stressful, fast-paced environments and effectively apply stress management techniques
  • Ability to resolve issues and work independently within the scope of their certification
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, diplomacy and a professional demeanor
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing and typing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively to carry out job requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
    • Medical office experience
      LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
  • Current, valid license, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • Active Membership, National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
    LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
  • CPFT (Certified Pulmonary Function Test License) or RPFT (Registered Pulmonary Function Test License).
