Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.



Department Profile:

Respiratory therapists at AdventHealth Orlando are committed to improve the quality of life for each patient presented to us with cardiopulmonary disease. Motivated by the application of effective, evidence-based practice while providing a heightened experience for the patient, the department has been focusing on creating an energized, positive culture and elevating awareness of the value these skilled practitioners bring to the bedside. On a quest to be the pre-eminent respiratory care department in the Southeastern United States, our respiratory therapists and support personnel will remain focused on eliminating device-related lung infection, preventing post-operative pulmonary complications, mitigating the duration of patient stay in the ICU, and facilitating successful transition of our patients back into the community.

Job Summary:

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the treatment, care, and needs of an assigned group of patients. Adheres to AdventHealth Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.



Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Critical thinking and patient assessment skills, with the ability to evaluate and modify plan of care
  • Ability to use applicable infection control standards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including documentation in the patient care record Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and use of computer applications
  • Airway management skills, including maintenance of a patient airway and care of artificial airways
  • Ability to provide optimal respiratory support including: administration of oxygen, inhaled medications, lung expansion, and bronchial hygiene
  • Ability to appropriately operate and manage non-invasive and invasive modes of mechanical ventilation
  • Ability to perform Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) puncture and analysis and hemodynamic monitoring
  • For adult care at appropriate campuses, ventilator patient transportation knowledge
  • Knowledge and skill to care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in a healthcare delivery system
  • Associate’s degree from a Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Science program, OR If hired prior to November 20, 2015, must be a graduate of a Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary program.
  • For Altamonte, Celebration, and Winter Park: If trained as an L&D Respiratory Therapist – Knowledge and skill to care for the neonatal patient including newborn oxygen therapy, newborn arterial blood gas sampling, newborn stabilization, and newborn ventilator care
  • Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary science (Preferred)


Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Current, valid state of Florida license as a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • For Cost Center 7633: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • For Cost Centers 7630, 7637, 1520, 0520, and 9390: Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • For Cost Center 0520, 1520, 4270, 5040, 7637, 9390: Current PALS and NRP certification (Preferred )
  • For Cost Center 4270, 5040, 7610, 7633: Current ACLS certification (Preferred )


Job Responsibilities:

  • Must satisfactorily complete an orientation, a critical care training program, pass a proficiency exam, and be proficient at all applicable procedures defined in the principal duties and responsibilities.
  • Practices standard precautions and enforces safety regulations per hospital policies on a continual basis. Documents and charges for procedures accurately and completely to ensure quality standards set by the department and hospital.
  • Responds to Code Blue emergencies immediately providing CPR per the American Heart Association guidelines. Performs airway maintenance including: proper use of manual resuscitators, suctioning, extubating, assists with bronchoscopy, assists with tracheostomy tube insertion, performs LMA insertion, oral and nasal pharyngeal airway insertion, and procedural respiratory support. May perform endotracheal intubation, under direct supervision, or after completion of documented competency.
  • Properly utilizes patient assessment skills, prescriber care plans, chart review, and conferring with multidisciplinary team to determine efficacy of therapy in a cost and time efficient manner making appropriate recommendations and changes per prescriber care plan. Performs respiratory therapies and oxygen delivery therapies and makes recommendations to the most efficient delivery method per prescriber care plan.
  • Initiates, maintains, transports and monitors mechanical ventilators to include all conventional modes of ventilation per policy and procedure. Reviews chest radiology reports as necessary and per policy and procedure. Initiates, maintains, and monitors the delivery of heliox therapy.
  • Properly performs hemodynamic procedures to include: assembly, calibration; assisting with pulmonary artery catheter insertion, calibration; performs cardiac output and hemodynamic / cardiopulmonary profiles. May perform arterial cannulation, under direct supervision, or after completion of documented competency.
  • Proactively initiates process improvement ideas. Assists with clinical instruction and precepting. Supports hospital and department mission, goals, and department metrics. Performs other duties as requested by department leadership.
  • Performs blood gas and co-oximetry analysis. Performs quality control as needed. Setup and perform oximetry, apnea, TC, and ETCO2 monitoring as ordered by physician.
  • May perform waived and/or non-waived Point of Care Testing. If performing non-waived Point of Care Testing, as defined in AHCA rule 59A-7.034, must have approved competency and documented proof (copy of either diploma or transcript, at the highest level of academic achievement) at the time of AdventHealth non-waived Point of Care training.
  • CAMPUS / UNIT-SPECIFIC DUTIES: Applicable Campuses: Performs arterial and PA line maintenance, assists with CVP catheter insertion, calibration, and maintenance, maintains arterial pressure equipment. Standby for bronchoscopy procedure. May be required to perform pulmonary function screen testing.
  • ALTAMONTE AND WINTER PARK: Performs, documents, and transmits quality 12-lead EKGs after hours as ordered by physician (as applicable).
  • CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, ALTAMONTE, CELEBRATION, AND WINTER PARK NEONATAL THERAPIST: Delivers neonatal resuscitation and assists with APGAR scoring at delivery per NRP guidelines. Maintains proper equipment in labor / delivery / perinatal areas. Provides artificial surfactant replacement (as applicable).
