Registered Dietitian III – Orlando - Full Time 

Florida Hospital seeks to hire a Registered Dietitian III who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Established in 1908, Florida Hospital is one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare systems in the country, caring for more than a million patients each year. The 2,286-bed acute-care medical facility, comprised of nine hospitals, has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the country for the past 10 years. It serves as a community hospital for Greater Orlando and as a major tertiary referral hospital for Central Florida and much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Department Profile:

The Nutritional Services Department employs approximately 750 teammates at 7 hospital campuses and 5 off-campus retail locations. The 5 areas of service provided are: Patient Services ─ Each hospital campus has a Patient Services Area (PSA) whose teams function to feed patients. To that end, the various PSA teams obtain patient orders for food selections, assemble thousands of patient trays each day, deliver meal trays to patients, deliver nourishments to refrigerators on the patient units, and interact with patients to provide a warm and healing experience. Retail Services ─ Each hospital campus and several non-campus locations have retail venues which serve food to visitors and Florida Hospital employees. The menu is planned and prepared by professional culinary chefs, cooks, and teammates who ensure that the food is attractive, nourishing, and tasty. The retail spaces also offer respite for our guests in inviting environments in accordance with CREATION Health principles. And the Florida Hospital Catering teams provide options from snacks to banquets to meet the culinary needs of every event. Food Production Center (FPC) ─ The 30,000 sq. ft. FPC is located on the Orlando campus and employs more than 75 team members in production, purchasing, and CBORD/IS support. As a centralized food manufacturing facility, the FPC receives, stocks, prepares, and delivers extensive quantities of food and supplies to all campuses and retail locations for patient and retail needs. The FPC uses a state-of-the-art 'cook-chill' system designed to cook foods and chill them rapidly to ensure freshness and safety. The FPC also has a full-service bakery where everything from bread and rolls to individual desserts and decorated cakes are prepared by professional pastry chefs Clinical ─ Registered Dietitians (RDs) collaborate with doctors and nurses to facilitate healing our in-patients through nutritional assessment and intervention. RDs make recommendations for interventions, provide tube feeding management, and diet instruction of the physician-ordered diet. They follow up with patients on tolerance of their diet, and serve as a resource to our teammates who work in the Patient Services Areas Center for Nutritional Excellence ─ The clinical staff delivers outpatient education and individualized nutrition counseling. They also participate in CREATION Health activities for employees and the community, provide nutrition information for corporate events such as cooking demos and health fairs, and serve as nutrition experts on the FH Speakers Bureau.

Job Summary:

The Registered Dietitian Specialist (RD III) provides advanced medical nutrition therapy including nutrition education, nutrition counseling, enteral/parenteral nutrition intervention, and condition-specific nutrition care on patients/clients using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians in specialized populations (pediatrics, nutrition support, renal, oncology/transplant, bariatrics, gerontology). The RD III utilizes relevant data to assess patients/clients for nutrition-related problems, identify and label specific treatable nutrition problems/diagnoses, implement appropriate nutrition interventions to correct nutrition-related behaviors/risk factors, and monitor and evaluate outcomes related to nutrition diagnosis, goals and interventions for patients/clients. The RD III exhibits quality in practice, competence and accountability for ensuring patient safety, and provides safe and quality- based services while meeting the mission and vision of the organization while meeting all regulatory requirements. The RD III gathers current clinical research, presents to leadership and facilitates approved practice change with minimal supervision. Applies dietetic knowledge including at organizational committees, patient rounds and through effective precepting of students, interns, and staff. The RD III utilizes resources effectively and efficiently, designs and implements quality improvement programs, supports institutional accreditation and provides regulatory compliance initiatives. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Ability to use computer-based electronic health record.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving and customer service skills. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers and support personnel. Ability to work well with minimal supervision.

  • Initiative to keep abreast of new information/products/developments in the field of Dietetics.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations as related to Dietetics practice.
  • Proficiency in the Nutrition Care Process of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
  • Proficiency in identifying and using comparative standards to estimate energy, fat, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, fluid, vitamin and mineral needs as well as recommended body weight, BMI, and desired growth patterns.
  • Ability to be flexible and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary.
  • Master’s degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, Human Nutrition or nutrition-related field OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, Human Nutrition or nutrition-related field AND 4-6 years of clinical nutrition experience
  • Bilingual – English (Required) Spanish (Preferred)
  • Graduate degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, Human Nutrition Health Sciences or nutrition-related field (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the accreditation requirements of regulatory agencies and International Organization for Standardization quality management systems (Preferred)
  • CBORD Diet Office experience (Preferred)
  • Cerner electronic health record experience (Preferred)
  • Experience working with dietetic students and interns (Preferred)
  • Post-graduate training in nutrition (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Current, active State of Florida Dietitian/Nutritionist license
  • Current, active Registered Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • Board Certified specialist in practicing area (pediatrics, renal, oncology, geriatrics) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or nutrition support through the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC)
  • Advanced practice, Board certification or specialist nutrition certification in nutrition (Preferred)
  • Post-Graduate certificate in nutrition (Preferred)

  • Provision of Services: The RD III provides safe, quality dietetic, food and nutrition services based upon customer expectations and needs and the mission and vision of the organization by following the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care including the Nutrition Care Process, the Academies Code of Ethics, organization screening, education and assessment procedures, and all national, state and local regulations. Provides specialized medical nutrition therapy by use of anthropometric measures, biochemical/medical data, nutrition focused physical exam findings, food and nutrition-related knowledge and history, and comparative standards and calculations to assess for nutrition-related problems. Identifies and labels specific treatable nutrition problem(s)/diagnoses. Implements appropriate nutrition interventions to correct nutrition-related behaviors/risk factors, and monitors and evaluates outcomes related to nutrition diagnosis, goals and interventions for patients/clients. Works closely with the nurse, physicians and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate nutrition care. Participates in medical rounds for specialized areas. Follows effective screening, education and assessment procedures, documents according to organization standards and policies, and practices safe and ethical ordering and billing of food and nutrition-related items and services.
  • Application of Research: Gathers the latest clinical nutrition research in his/her relevant area and disseminates to the organization. Participates in, and/or generates research to enhance practice by using best available research/evidence as foundation of evidenced based practice and ensuring evidenced-based practices are implemented in the delivery of nutrition and dietetic services.
  • Communication and Application of Knowledge: Serves as subject matter expert for his/her area to the rest of the clinical team by applying research to practice. Applies knowledge and expertise in communications including effective precepting of interns, students and staff, educating patients and staff and sharing expertise in food, nutrition, and dietetics. Participates in organization committees and patient rounds as directed by manager. Exhibits leadership through organization involvement.
  • Utilization and Management of Resources: Utilizes resources effectively and efficiently. Documents resource use consistent with organization standards and ensures nutrition and dietetic services and resources are utilized in a safe, effective and productive way. Communicates need for additional resources to supervisor or manager.
  • Quality in Practice: Provides quality services using a systematic process with identified leadership, accountability and dedicated resources. Designs and conducts minimum of one process/quality improvement project per year to improve nutrition-related processes, nutrition systems, and/or patient care programs; presents results to organizational, local, state, or national audiences or publishes in peer reviewed professional journal. Provides regulatory compliance initiatives and supports institutional accreditation processes. Follows all regulations, policies and laws. Utilizes national quality standards and best practices in services. Utilizes quality improvement activities to direct or advance practice.
  • Competency and Accountability: Accepts accountability for ensuring safety and quality in the services provided. Pursues relevant opportunities to advance knowledge and practice. Follows all organization policies, procedures and work instructions that apply to position. Completes other clinical nutrition duties as directed by manager.
