Psychiatric Technician – Psychiatric Medical Unit East – Orlando

Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire a Psychiatric Technician who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

Department Profile:

The Psychiatric Medicine Unit is a 20 bed, inpatient, adult behavioral health unit. We care for patients with a primary psychiatric diagnosis, as well as a secondary medical diagnosis. We are a full Med/Surg level unit and can care for all medical needs, except telemetry.

Work Hours/Shifts:

7:00am – 7:00pm / Three 12 hour shifts

Job Summary:

The Psych Tech works under the supervision of the professional nursing staff in performing specific duties and ADL in caring for age specific groups of psychiatric patients identified in the position responsibilities. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Adequate knowledge of activities of daily living and vital signs.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Organizational ability, sound judgment and initiative.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric terminology and various treatment approaches
  • Two years of college with a major in psychology, nursing or related fields. (Preferred)
  • One year’s experience in a healthcare setting. (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior Florida Hospital’s Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program

  • Performs 15 minute checks on assigned patients focusing on behavior and appearance.
  • Reports patient status, abnormal problems, and behavioral changes to RN and under the direction of an RN performs defined basic nursing procedures per hospital P&P and behavioral health Standards of Care.
  • Performs properly and legibly documents and reports all procedures in accordance with department policy.
  • Assists in identifying needs and developing/modifying plan of care.
  • Recognizes potential escalation of behavior and has ability to use appropriate verbal and physical interventions.
  • Recognizes potential safety hazards, intervenes for the safety of patients, visitors and staff and notifies appropriate department or person for correction of the problem.
  • Possesses a basic knowledge of psychotropic drugs, uses and side effects. Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities. Demonstrates accurate documentation and monitoring of activities as needed. Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department.
  • Exhibits desire to learn and upgrade skills. Interacts effectively with other team members. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or unit.
