AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Physician Assistant - Surgical who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,368-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.



Department Summary:

On the AH Orlando campus, AdventHealth Transplant Institute’s Heart and Lung Transplant Program is seeking an experienced cardiothoracic surgical PA to join our growing & thriving practice. Our service currently consists of 3 surgeons and 2 Surgical Pas working collaboratively with the Cardiology and Critical Care Medical teams. We perform the full spectrum of advanced heart failure surgical therapies as well as core cardiothoracic procedures. The selected candidate will regularly be performing CABG, valve surgery, thoracic aortic work, Ventricular Assist Device, heart and lung transplant, ECMO insertion and management, and total artificial heart implantation. We are a busy practice having performed 16 lung transplants, 58 heart transplants, 68 VAD implants, and 126 ECMO runs in 2018. Our surgeon team consists of Dr. Duane Davis, who was past president of ISHLT; Dr. Scott Silvestry, who currently educates other surgeons on VAD implant techniques for the industry; and Dr. Don Botta, Transplant and VAD Surgical Director. AdventHealth, a 2,247-bed acute-care medical facility, is a member of Adventist Health System. We serve as a community hospital for Greater Orlando and as a major tertiary referral hospital for Central Florida and much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and Latin America. Job Summary:

The Physician Assistant (PA) supports the clinical operation of AdventHealth Transplant Institute with primary focus on clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Inpatient Responsibilities include Pre-operative admission; consultation; evaluation and medical optimization; Intra-Operative 1st and 2nd assistance; autonomous invasive bedside procedures; Post-operative ICU, floor patient care and discharge, including prescription writing. Outpatient Responsibilities include Pre & Post- Operative clinic, Out-Of-Hospital patient clinical phone call management, Donor call organ assessment & operative call-in. Delivery of patient care will be conducted in collaboration with faculty surgeons and physicians. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.



Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Cardiothoracic anatomic and patho-physiologic knowledge
  • Cardiothoracic & critical care clinical management knowledge, with sound clinical judgement, decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Conduit Vein harvesting open/endoscopic
  • Conduit Arterial harvesting open
  • Surgical 1st assistance training & Proficiency
  • Bedside cardiothoracic surgical procedural skills
  • Central Venous Line Access, Arterial line placement, PA catheter placement, Open tube thoracotomy
  • Inpatient surgical service cooperative participation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and written & verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain effective relationships/flexibility with patients, families & all multidisciplinary team members
  • Computer skills & ability to work effectively across multiple electronic medical record platforms (MS Office Platform)
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment with effective time-management skills and adaptability to change
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and customer service skills, with a commitment to quality & safety
  • Initiative to keep abreast of new information/product/developments within the specialty
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) (Preferred)
  • Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
  • Master’s Degree in PA Studies (unless Graduated prior to 2008)
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ post-graduation clinical experience or one year post-graduate surgical residency training experience
  • Minimum of one year of cardiothoracic specialty specific experience
  • Pre-Operative, Intra-Operative, Post-operative Surgical patient care experience
  • Critical care experience
  • Teaching/preceptor experience (Preferred)
  • Leadership experience (Preferred)



Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • State of Florida physician assistance license (Current, Valid & Without restriction)
  • National Commission Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) Certification (Current)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery Certificate of Added Qualification (CTS CAQ) (Preferred)
  • Cardiac Surgical Unit Advanced Life Support Certification (CSU ALS) (Preferred)
  • Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator (CCTC) by the American Board of Transplant Certification (ABTC) (Preferred)



Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior AdventHealth’s Core Values of Keep Me Safe, Love Me, Make it Easy, and Own it as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program.
  • Develops and evaluates treatment of care plans for patients with acute, chronic, and surgical concerns. Functions within the Outpatient and Inpatient acute care settings.
  • Participates in Clinical and multidisciplinary rounds by contributing specific surgical perspectives. Promotes integrated comprehensive patient care and assists with discharge planning.
  • Provides relevant patient education and counseling regarding heath status/test results/disease process and discharge planning.
  • Performs first and second surgical assist duties within the Operating room and/or bedside setting. Assist physicians with Heart and Lung Transplantation; Ventricular Assist Devices; and Cardiothoracic Surgeries.
  • Actively participates in regulatory-related data collection and surveys agencies. Participates in the preparation of regulated data reporting for regulatory agencies i.e. DNV, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTRAMACS).
  • Serving as an expert resource and point-of-contact on clinical and protocol-related issues. Maintains a current understanding of changes in respect to accrediting bodies
  • Participates in the preparation of action plans in response to recommendations for improvement and deficiencies identified by regulatory agencies. Participates in mock surveys and self-assessments, focusing on continual readiness.
  • Providing in-service and continuing education for staff within the scope of the Transplant Program.
  • Call requirements will be rotational to include a 24-hour/7-day coverage system. Out-Of-House SICU and Floor call responsibilities, Donor call organ assessment & OR call responsibilities.
  • Utilizes sensitivity, responsiveness, caring and compassionate attitude with patients, families and visitors by listening and communicating effectively with courtesy, consideration and tact.
  • Attends and participates in transplant team meetings including Patient Review Committee, hospital interdisciplinary rounds, discharge planning and QAPI. Communicates with the transplant team in a professional and effective manner. Participation in database & clinical research.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by Assistant Director or physician team.
