Phlebotomist


JOB SUMMARY

Successful candidate will perform a variety of venipuncture techniques involved in the collection of blood specimens. Candidate will draw blood from patients or donors in hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes: Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures. Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure. Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag. Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing. May prick finger to draw blood. May conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood bank. Candidate may also perform other job related duties as assigned, needed or requested.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to stand/walk 60% of the time; Able to walk, climb, stand, turn, twist, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, lift at least 35 lbs., carry, finger, hold, talk, see with a good field of vision, and hear; Communicate on the telephone and directly with patients; read paperwork, printouts and computer screens; Requires manual dexterity sufficient to maintain files, operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier and other small desk equipment and computer. Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

1.   High school graduate or equivalent.

2.   Demonstrated ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques.

3.   Knowledge of appropriate blood processing and handling procedures.

4.   Ability to accurately complete and maintain administrative documents and records.

5.   Ability to understand and follow specific clinical protocols, specifications and procedures.

6.   Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.

7.   Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

8.   Demonstrated knowledge of sterile procedures.        

9.   Must be willing to float to other AHMG practices, within reason, when patient load, vacation schedules etc. make it necessary.

10.Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.


CERTIFICATE/LICENSE

•    Certified Phlebotomist, ASCP/AMT/ASPT/NCA or NPA Certified or LPN/RN Licensure appropriate to the State of Florida.

•    CPR Certified
