Pharmacy Technician III – Investigational Drug Service – Orlando

AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Pharmacy Technician III who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

7a – 3p ; M-F

Job Summary:

The Technician III will be responsible for but not limited to the following: Assists the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication. Prepares sterile products such as IV solutions, piggyback containers, and cytotoxic drugs, irrigations, TPN’s, epidurals, prefilled syringes, reconstituting of medications under aseptic conditions. Accurately reads and enters medication orders into the pharmacy information system. Keeps work area and equipment clean and neat. Helps with drug distribution Helps in the training of pharmacy technician I, II and newly hired pharmacy technicians. Accurately refills Pyxis MedStation; accurately conducts inventory of Pyxis MedStation and accurately loads and unloads medications to/from Pyxis as directed by the Director or Supervisor. Assists IV pharmacist with recording and distribution of large and small volume IV solutions. Performs all necessary tasks related to front reception area. Performs all duties necessary to provide for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs. Serves the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients. Specific age groups are identified in the position responsibilities. Handle a high volume of work with minimal direct supervision. Perform all level I and II job function and maintains performance standards/expectations. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. p>

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Competent in medical terminology, generic and brand medication names, medication uses, and DME knowledge(Preferred)
  • Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skills (Preferred)
  • Ability to work under pressure (Preferred)
  • Ability to interact professionally with public and other medical staff (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of compounding oral/topical medications (Preferred)
  • Retail Pharmacy experience, at least 3-5 years(Preferred)
  • High School graduate or G.E.D. certification. (Preferred)
  • Experience with obtaining payment of prescriptions from insurance companies (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Must be registered with the State of Florida Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Technician certification (PCTB)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prescription processing: follow a systematic procedure for assisting with the flow of prescriptions through the pharmacy. Fill in patient information on all prescriptions. Obtain insurance information from patient and keep patient abreast of any insurance problems. Maintain current patient information in computer. Assure that patient has signed HIPAA release. Keep pharmacist aware of patient status and need for prescription check. Assure orders are processed, dispensed and delivered accurately and promptly. Always obtain pharmacists’ verification before distribution of any medication.
  • Prescription preparation: follows strict guidelines in preparing and dispensing medications under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Assist the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication accurately and efficiently. Prepare various compounds using aseptic technique under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Prepare and label prescriptions for the pharmacist before dispensing. Obtain controlled substances for prescription filling under the immediate supervision of pharmacist. Double-count schedule II controlled substances before dispensing. Place all dispensing materials for pharmacist final verification (i.e. stock container, original prescription(s), labeling, etc.). Utilize knowledge of the generic and brand names of medications, medication uses, DME knowledge, and understanding of mathematical principles.
  • Communication: communicate with patients and other pharmacies regarding prescription transfers or clarification. Answer phone calls and determine nature of request. Respond to requests to determine if there are refills. Respond to needs of patients, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners regarding status of prescriptions and deliveries.
  • Inventory management: maintain adequate current stock of medications. Maintain accuracy in inventory control including, but not limited to computer. Coordinate receiving, record keeping, stocking drugs and checking for shorts, discrepancies and outdated merchandise. Monitor inventory system to insure proper storage conditions for all pharmacy items. Check products for expiration date at least every month and before dispensing. Call hospital pharmacy to obtain needed drugs/supplies as requested by pharmacist. Respond to needs of patient, physician, nursing stations, and/or community pharmacists regarding special order or borrowing needs as requested by pharmacist. Adjust inventory stock levels and orders drugs in appropriate amount to replenish stock. Never run out of fast movers (top 50). Assure medications not ordered through EDI are entered into inventory.
  • Expense management: perform all activities involved in the management of pharmaceutical expenses by reviewing and comparing generic costs. Seek additional vendors for hard to obtain pharmaceuticals whenever necessary. Identify changes in drug movement patterns to Manager or Pharmacy Director as needed to address issues that may impact pharmacy budget.
  • Organization and efficiency of pharmacy: contribute to the organization and efficient operation of the pharmacy. Organize assigned work area by keeping it well stocked with necessary items, and keeping it in an orderly fashion. Contribute potential ideas to improve patient care and department organization. Plan and manage time in order to complete work assignments within a scheduled time frame, so that assistance may be given to other team members when needed or as directed. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure and stress. Carry out special assignments as assigned by the pharmacist. Assist in the training of new pharmacy staff members, residents, and students. Answer physician and staff questions as able or refer to the pharmacist. Utilize the pharmacy computer.
  • Professional development: remain current in all retail business and other necessary policies and procedures to insure consistent quality of knowledge and performance. Attend monthly staff meetings. Read memos and posted changes. Participate in hospital or department in-service programs or continuing education programs as requested by supervisor. Leadership skills and ability to manage tech/cashiers and delegate duties.
  • Disaster plan involevment: understand disaster plan according to department policy. Participate in Disaster operations by coming to the retail store when requested. Facilitate the smooth and efficient operation of the department by being available and prepared to work during scheduled working hours in order to meet approved staffing levels.
