Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time – 10 hour shifts until 11pm. Every other weekend required.

You Will Be Responsible For:
  • Collects medication history information from patient or patient family member.
  • Contacts patient’s pharmacy, physician or nursing facility as necessary and follows-up.
  • Works without direct supervision.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, patient family members, co-workers, supervisors, peers and support personnel.
  • Enters correct information into the hospital computer system.
  • Works collaboratively with Emergency Department employees to provide excellent customer service.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups and obtains clarification from pharmacist if dose does not seem appropriate.
  • Understands all resources available to research drug information.
  • Assists the pharmacist by filling physician orders for medications.
  • Aseptically prepares, compounds, and dispenses intravenous medications in compliance with USP797 regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation, quality assurance, legal and other regulatory requirements, including JCAHO and ASHP standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct storage and disposal of medications.
  • Responsible for required monthly medication inspections for assigned areas.
  • Maintains accurate counts of inventory in carousel, correcting counts as necessary to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Loads medications into appropriate Pyxis station upon receipt of order for new medication(s) not currently stocked in said Pyxis.
  • Assists the pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly, consulting with the pharmacist if any questions arise about appropriate dosing.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform appropriate calculations for proper preparation of medications for all patient populations.
  • Performs other pharmacy related duties as requested or required. 

What You Will Need:
  • High School diploma or the equivalent required.
  • Two-years pharmacy experience required
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Status required.
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration required within 3 months of hire.
Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, obtains medication histories for patients coming into the hospital through the Emergency Department.  As time allows, obtains or clarifies histories for patients admitted the previous night to any hospital nursing unit.  Fills physician orders for medications; prepares IV admixture solutions, using proper aseptic technique; maintains accurate records for all medication compounding; properly labels and prepares medications for dispensing.
