 Monday, Tuesdays and Fridays 9:00am - 5:30pm

The largest health care provider in Johnson County, Kansas, the SMH network includes SMMC and SMH - Prairie Star and will soon include SMH - Blue Valley, a third major health care facility. Our 54-acre campus at SMMC is comprised of the main hospital, a community health education building, six physician office buildings and an associate child care center. The Emergency Department at SMMC is the busiest in Johnson County. We deliver more babies each year at the Shawnee Mission Birth Center than any other hospital in the metropolitan area and our Center for Women’s Health is nationally recognized. We have seven Shawnee Mission Primary Care locations with more than 30 Board-certified doctors who specialize in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics as well as Centra Care Shawnee Mission Urgent Care locations.
The Pharmacy Technician is a certified and registered, licensed trained assistant to the Pharmacist. They perform various drug distributive, record-keeping, and accountability functions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

  • Accurately places into stock wholesaler and direct orders with stickers.
  • Accurately posts charges and credits.
  • Answers telephone identifying self and department, assisting caller.
  • Completes order requisitions to Purchasing Department both accurately and timely.
  • Ensures assigned areas are checked for outdates and documentation completed for life safety replacement (ex. code carts).
  • Ensures correct labeling for all oral and injectable preparations documenting lot numbers and expiration dates for regulatory compliance.
  • Checks in all narcotic sheets.
  • Delivers discharge medications, including controlled substances, to the patient bedside when needed according to policy.
  • Fills all interdepartmental requisitions daily.
  • Maintains refrigerator logs daily and assures completion.
  • Restocks general pharmacy and solution shelves daily identifying on "want" book when inventory is depleted.
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement indicators as required.
  • Performs courier duties, as necessary in a timely manner using hospital resources wisely.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding as directed by supervising pharmacist.
  • Performs quality controls as required by USP 797 standards.
  • Places orders to wholesaler and direct order accounts as required.
  • Restocks all areas of the pharmacy, as necessary.
  • Understands drug recall and defect reporting completing surveillance of all recalled items as assigned.
  • Have a good understanding of mathematical principles performing accurate calculations for compounded products assuring double check by supervising pharmacist.
  • Accurately and continuously files physician’s orders.
  • Always obtain pharmacists’ verification before distribution of any medication.
  • Cleans work area thoroughly, wears appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by pharmacist, Manager or Director.
  • 2 to 3 years of Pharmacy Technician Experience.
  • Good Math skills to prepare medications accurately.
    • Previous retail pharmacy technician experience
    • Knowledge of inventory management techniques preferred.
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Good Computer skills
  • State of Kansas License in Registered Pharmacy Technician
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
