Job Description

Per Diem Sleep Center Technologist
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Sleep Center Technologist, reporting to the Sleep Center Manager, performs quality sleep studies for all patients under minimal supervision to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Facilitates all aspects of study completion and reporting.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs quality sleep recordings by collecting, analyzing, and integrating pertinent patient history information, properly preparing the patient according to age, conducting the examination, and preparing the recording for the physician interpretation 
  • Implements appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and/or bi-level positive airway pressure (PAP) and oxygen administration and informs the nursing supervisor and/or the physician of changes in the patient’s condition or abnormalities on the recording, when necessary
  • Provides patient education according to established guidelines including communicating with patients and family members on instructions in techniques to optimize their care in the Sleep Center, as well as after the testing is completed
  • Maintains supplies and equipment for patient care and maintains an orderly and efficient system for storage and retrieval of patient information
  • Adheres to all organizational policies, practices and federal or state regulations pertaining to patient care, privacy, and quality assurance.  Actively supports and participates quality improvement initiatives
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of health care field and medical terminology
  • Working knowledge of sleep procedures and equipment
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing and typing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively to carry out job requirements
  • Ability to closely observe sleep tracings and respond appropriately to seizure activity and other abnormalities
  • Ability to prepare and calibrate equipment to determine proper functioning and make adjustments as necessary
  • Ability to apply electrodes and sensors according to published standards of the International 10-20 Placement System
  • Proficient performance of physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals
  • Working knowledge of proper positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting and Titration
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft® Office applications
  • Scoring of Studies performed to current AASM Standards
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School and minimum of 1 year experience full-time in polysomnography OR
  • Associate’s degree in Polysomnography Technology
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
    • Associate’s Degree in Polysomnographic Technology
    • Basic EKG recognition course
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
  • Current CPR / BLS Certification
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist through the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)
