Job Description

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

JOB SUMMARY

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist will administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients and then monitor the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the drug localize. Also explain test procedures to patients, prepare a dosage of the radiopharmaceutical and administer it.  The technologist must adhere to safety standards that keep the radiation dose to workers and patient as low as reasonably possible. Perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of radio-nuclides for diagnosis and treatment.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to sit 60% of the time; Able to walk, climb, stand, turn, twist, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, lift at least 35 lbs, carry, hold, talk, see with a good field of vision, and hear; Communicate on the telephone and directly with patients; read paperwork, printouts and computer screens; Requires manual dexterity sufficient to maintain files, operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier and other small desk equipment and computer. Must be able to adjust routine to accommodate patient or department without affecting departmental flow.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

1.    High School graduate or equivalent is required.

2.    Knowledge of the principles and practices of diagnostic radiographic procedures.

3.    Knowledge of basic chemistry, anatomy, film apparatus and film processing techniques.

4.    Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

5.    Ability to lift and position patients for the type of nuclear medicine procedure required.

6.    Ability to set up and operate nuclear medicine camera, GM meters, and dose calibrators.

7.    Ability to clean, maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment.

8.    Ability to notice details in drawings and differences in shapes and shadings.

9.    Knowledge of radiation protection standards, including basic knowledge of the radio-sensitive areas of the body and standard methods and devices used for protection in order to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained for patient or operator.

10. Experience with optical discs and a laser camera is preferred.

11. Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE

1.    State of Florida License - Nuclear Medicine is required.

2.    National Registry by Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required.

3.    BLS and ACLS certification is required.
