Work Hours/Shift:

FT / Day

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Accurately transcribes pathology reports, including surgical, bone marrow, lab meetings,  autopsy reports, and general correspondence using computer system.  Approximately 65% of the position is spent performing transcription.

  • Checks reports for accuracy and then faxes reports.

  • Informs pathologist about upcoming frozen sections.

  • Assists pathologist with frozen section.

  • Prepares cassettes for pathology specimens.

  • Receives and handles pathology phone calls.

  • Compiles reports and sends tissue (nerve, muscle and lymph nodes), slides and blocks for outside consultation.

  • Maintains Pathology code files.

  • Maintains files for surgical cases, bone marrow, and autopsies.

  • Files and retrieves surgical, bone marrow and autopsy reports, slides and blocks.         

  • Follows safety and infection control policies of the laboratory and all other hospital procedures.

  • Must be able to politely deal with adult and geriatric patients and family members.

  • Prepares request forms (patient history/insurance info., etc) on bone marrows and peripheral bloods for flow cytometry and cytogenetic studies.  Ships forms, reports and materials to appropriate reference laboratory. 


What You Will Need:

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two year of medical transcription experience is required. 

  • A minimum of 6 months of experience in handling surgical specimens is required. 

  • College level courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Transcription preferred. 

Job Summary:

Responsible for accurate transcription and distribution of pathology reports, including surgical, histology and bone marrow reports.  Maintains Pathology Office Manual, surgical pathology room and morgue.   Answers pathology phone calls, accepts lab orders, faxes reports to physician offices and schedules frozen sections.  Files pathology slides, reports and blocks.   Assists pathologist with frozen sections and other pathology duties. Obtains or provides information for assigned adult or geriatric patients or family members.  Responsibilities include the adherence to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan, to the rules and regulations of all local, state, and federal agencies and to the standards of all accrediting bodies.
