You will be responsible for:
  • Patient Satisfaction Scores meet organizational goals
  • Demonstrates “Caring behaviors” to patients, families, and colleagues
  • Includes the following behaviors in the delivery of patient care daily:
  • Introduces self to patient and explains role in their care that day, INCLUDING updating patient communication board in patient’s room.
  • Calls patient by his or her preferred name.
  • Rounds with previous shift staff and includes patient in daily plan of care.
  • Uses a handshake, or a touch on the arm.
  • Uses the mission, vision, and value statements in delivering your care.
  • Demonstrates “Patient First” Behaviors
  • Includes the following 7 “Patient First” behaviors in the delivery of patient care daily:
  • Make the Time : when leaving the room ask, “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
  • Take the Time: Scripted “Welcome”, Orient patient/ and family to room and environment.
  • Plan the Time: use dry erase boards in patient rooms to update with date, nurse, aide, procedures.
  • Explain the Time: explain what you are doing and how it will benefit the patient.
  • Account for the Time: apologize and account for delays and use service recovery if necessary.
  • Pick the Time and Place: for confidential conversations, venting, personal, etc.
  • Thank them for their Time: End on a positive note-inform of what happens next, provide education, mention patient satisfaction survey, conduct follow up phone calls.
  • Demonstrates respect for human dignity and self-worth

  • Demonstrates awareness of factors by all of the following:
  • Correct utilization of Pyxis system for  supplies.
  • Returns dirty equipment to supply room when not in use.
  • Complies with decisions made for staffing adjustments (i.e. floating).
  • Assists nurse with assigned patients
  • Provides care to patients in accordance with standards of care:
  • Provides assistance with basic hygiene, comfort, and activities of daily living.
  • Reports change of condition changes, potential problems or concerns involving the patient or family to the nurse (i.e. vital signs, Intake/Output).
  • Interprets arrhythmias, documents and initiates treatment within the scope of practice in the ED
  • Performs NIHSS initials and subsequent scoring of stroke patients.
  • Begins initial gathering of data of ambulance and/or patients transferred from triage
  • Administers ACLS medications in a code situation under the supervision of the RN and per the approved hospital list
  • Assists in maintaining patient skin integrity by:
  • Turning and repositioning patient according to policy.
  • Utilizing identified skin products according to Skin Protocol.
  • Notifies nurse if skin breakdown observed
  • Performs urinary catheterization using sterile technique, to include specimen collection and documents
  • Removes Urinary Catheters and documents.
  • Reports observations to nurse
  • Performs simple clean dressing changes and documents
  • Performs accucheks, hemoccults, urine pregnancy, urinalysis, gastrocult per hospital procedure and documents
  • Inserts Nasogastric tubes per hospital procedure and documents
  • Discontinues Nasogastric tubes, disposes of in accordance with hospital Biohazardous waste policy.
  • Documents on patient record
  • Inserts peripheral IV catheters per hospital procedure and documents
  • Removes peripheral IV catheters, disposes of in accordance with hospital Biohazardous waste policy.
  • Observes site and notifies nurse of condition.
  • Documents on patient record
  • Performs proper application of splints and Buck’s traction
  • Performs unit based phlebotomy for patient lab tests and documents
  • Empties foley bags, JP’s, and hemovacs.
  • Documents on patient record
  • Documents patient care according to policy:
  • Intake and Output
  • Vital Signs
  • Weights
  • Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Specimen Collection
  • Takes vital signs and measures Intake/Output
  • Transports patients, medical records, and equipment to destinations within scheduled time frames, observing correct techniques
  • Assists in positioning, lifting, and ambulating patients, using appropriate safety precautions and body mechanics
  • Answers call lights in a timely manner.
  • Communicates patient requests, problems or concerns to the nurse
  • Weighs patients using correct procedure
  • Collects specimens as assigned by nurse
  • Follows hospital policy for patient identification when collecting specimens
  • Performs unit tasks supportive to patient care and operations of the department

  • Wears nametag identification and is aware of role in minimizing Security incidents.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Life Safety Program and participates in Fire Drills as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in Emergency Preparedness Program, participates in Disaster Drills as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Medical Equipment Program and how to report malfunctioning equipment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Utility Systems Program and the department(s) response to utility failure.

What will you need?
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Completion of a formal paramedic training program
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively
  • Florida State Certification as a Paramedic
  • Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS
