Nurse Manager OR – Surgery – Apopka

Florida Hospital Apopka seeks to hire a Nurse Manager who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

The newly opened Florida Hospital Apopka is a seven-story, 120-bed hospital offering an extensive range of services including expanded surgical services, advanced surgical suites and a catheterization lab. The hospital also features a 30,000-square-foot emergency department with pediatric-friendly beds, imaging services, a full-service cafeteria, chapel, gift shop and on-site fire station. The hospital opened in December 2017, replacing the 50-bed hospital that Florida Hospital had operated in downtown Apopka for more than four decades.

Department Profile:

Opening in December Florida Hospital Apopka’s Surgical and Endoscopy Services will offer out-patient procedures in three suites supported by Pre-Admission Testing, Pre-operative and Recovery Areas. Our facility provides the latest minimally invasive equipment to allow our patients to have their procedure and recover in the comfortable surroundings of their own home, all in the same day. We support procedures for multiple specialties and pediatrics age 6 months or older. Our team of experienced Board Certified Anesthesiologists and certified Nurse Anesthetists, along with our highly-skilled Registered Nurses, provide confidence and exceptional care to our patients.

Work Hours/Shifts:

M-F; 8a-4:30

Job Summary:

The Nurse Manager (NM) is a registered professional nurse who has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their hospital experience. The NM is directly responsible to the Director of Nursing (DON) or Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for the continual operation of a specified nursing unit. The NM is able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, creativity, and has the knowledge to manage resources to achieve quality performance, positive employee relations, and compliance with hospital guidelines. The NM is skilled in coaching, motivating, mentoring, and leading a professional and technical team in the delivery of services for our patient population. The NM assures quality of care is delivered for our patients and demonstrates effective stewardship of scarce resources. The NM is the change agent for the assigned areas of responsibility and is responsible for implementing any changes that the unit is required to undergo. The NM actively participates in outstanding customer service, including service to patients, families, physicians, and other contacts, and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) either upon hire/promotion or within 36 months of hire/promotion
  • Minimum two years acute care nursing practice experience

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Current, valid State of Florida license as a registered professional nurse
  • Professional certification from a national organization (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior Florida Hospital’s Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program

    1. Human Resource Management – Monitors performance of the staff and takes corrective action for improvement as appropriate. Uses independent judgment to:
      1. Selects applicant for interview and hire and assures appropriate orientation.
      2. Suspend or invoke other discipline for work infractions, performance deficiencies and conduct violations by exercising supervisory authority.
      3. Evaluates supervised employees, recommends promotion of supervised employees, and recommends bonuses and awarding of other discretionary rewards to supervised employees. In collaboration with the Human Resources Department, terminates supervised employees, where appropriate.
      4. The assignment of employees to particular duties or activities or to authorize and assign overtime to employees where appropriate.
      5. The adjustment/resolution of complaints, concerns, and problems of supervised employees regarding work assignments, hours of work overtime scheduling, and other work-related matters.

      8. Creates a work environment that addresses the physical and emotional needs of the staff and one that is conducive to retention of the staff.

    2. Financial Management – Understands health care economics, public policy, and finance as it pertains to the delivery of patient care.
      1. Understands the broad impact of reimbursement on the delivery of patient care services, including but not limited to Medicare, Managed care, Medicaid, third party providers, challenges to current health care policies, and key legislative initiatives at the local, state, and national level.
      2. Develops, analyzes, and interprets unit-department based budgeting. Maintains staffing and scheduling, and resource utilization within budgeted targets for the unit.
      3. Fosters patient, family, staff, and physician satisfaction. Understands the impact of dissatisfaction on the business goals of the unit.
      4. Is involved in capital budgeting; may be required to produce a cost benefit analysis to justify requested equipment.
      5. Utilizes information systems to support business decisions.

    3. Performance Improvement – Demonstrates familiarity with the performance improvement model of the organization.
      1. Champions performance improvement activities on the unit through problem identification, assessment, data gathering, change implementation, and evaluation of outcomes.
      2. Is actively involved in all aspects of patient safety on the unit including but not limited to: sentinel event monitoring and reporting, root cause analysis, DNV (regulatory agency) requirements, incident reporting, medication safety policies and procedures.
      3. Assures workplace safety for the employees and demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements for workplace safety, i.e., CMS, OSHA, DNV, etc.
      4. Supports continual process improvement by sponsoring and/or participating in the activities.
      5. Ensures that practice changes, as a result of performance improvement activities, are implemented. Sets quality standards and initiatives for the department through collaboration with leadership and implementation of evidence based practice where appropriate.

    4. Critical Thinking/Technology – Utilizes critical thinking skills in the performance of their duties.
      1. Demonstrates and understanding of technology utilized in the organization.
      2. Plans, organizes and leads the unit through application of critical thinking skills
      3. Utilizes data driven decision making, incorporating evidence into the decision process

    5. Leadership and Clinical Practice Knowledge – Provides leadership for the effective and efficient operation of assigned unit. Assures clinical practice is of the highest quality.

      3. Assures appropriate application of clinical knowledge in the care of all patients
      4. Plans for delivery of care to the patient and evaluates the outcomes of care delivered in relation to clinical effectiveness
