Donation Advocate – Translife – Orlando

Orlando seeks to hire a Donation Advocate who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

Work Hours/Shifts:

On call Shifts; 12 days 24hrs.

Job Summary:

The Donation Advocate (DA) works with the organ and tissue recovery and hospital services team members as an onsite resource providing emotional support to families facing the death of a loved one. The DA will enhance the quality of end of life care that TransLife provides by supporting the family through the acute loss, offering the option of organ and tissue donation to the family when appropriate, facilitating the donation authorization and Uniform Donor Risk Assessment Interview (UDRAI) and providing continued care thorough the organ and tissue donation process. The DA collaborates with the organ recovery staff to offer therapeutic interactions and interventions to families in crisis and to offer the option of organ and tissue donation in an empathetic and compassionate manner that is respectful of cultural and religious beliefs. Serves as an expert in obtaining authorization for organ and tissue donation. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Strong assessment and crisis intervention skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of dynamics of grief and bereavement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The flexibility of on-call duties, extended hours and travel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. (Preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Health Sciences, Counseling, or related field
  • Two years of experience in a field such as Organ Donation, Psychology, Social Work or Counseling.
  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Health Sciences, Counseling or related field. (Preferred)
  • Five years of previous hospital experience in a trauma or critical care setting. (Preferred)
  • Five years of experience with families making end-of-life decisions. (Preferred)
  • Five years of pastoral or hospice care experience. (Preferred)
  • Five years of bereavement counseling experience. (Preferred)
  • Previous teaching/coaching experience (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the TransLife morning call to review daily activity. Will actively participate in the morning call to review family care information or issues with patients where a donation approach may be imminent. Also participates in the organ recovery staff call schedule to monitor donor referrals, review family dynamics and serve as the lead in developing a plan for the family approach and donation discussion.
  • Responds to any hospital within TransLife’s Donor Service Area (DSA) for any potential organ/tissue donor patients to provide emotional support to families facing the death of a loved one. Performs an onsite assessment of the hospital and family dynamics to evaluate the optimal donation approach process.
  • Rounds on actual or potential organ and tissue donor patients to ensure that there are no changes that would require a response by the TransLife OPC. Effectively communicates with Pastoral Care, Social Work and other social services entities at the donor hospital to ensure good emotional care for the potential donor patient’s family prior to the approach for organ and tissue donation.
  • Acts as a resource for the TransLife OPC staff for issues or questions surrounding the organ and tissue donation approach process.
  • Effectively communicates with the Pastoral Care, Social Work and other support services professionals prior to the donation approach and ongoing to ensure the donor family psycho-social needs are met. Effectively works with the TransLife Organ Procurement Coordinator (OPC) and Hospital Services staff to ensure excellent care for the potential donor family and exceptional customer service to our hospital partners during a donation event.
  • Acts as the primary TransLife staff member responsible for obtaining authorization for organ and tissue donation. The DA will stay with the donor family throughout the donation approach and authorization process and will complete the TransLife Donation Authorization and Uniformed Donor Risk Assessment Interview (UDRAI) form(s). Ensures that the organ and tissue donation approach process meets the definition of TransLife’s Effective Request process.
  • Participates in TransLife’s Donor After-Care Program as needed and as assigned. This effort includes writing donor family and hospital follow-up letters, and making follow-up donor boxes for families who were unable to donate.
  • Effectively assists the TransLife Family Services Coordinator in planning donor family events to include Honor Your Loved One Day, Gift of Gospel, and Remembrance Day.
  • Leads case reviews of each donation discussion to evaluate and improve the effective request process.
  • Develops and implements advance authorization training programs/workshops for the organ recovery staff with scenario-based skills practice. Assesses performance and provides feedback to increase skills. Works with TransLife leadership to monitor authorization performance rates and leads performance improvement initiatives aimed at increasing authorization rates.
  • Works with the Hospital and Professional Services staff to provide hospital educational programs as needed to facilitate the donation process.
  • Participates in national conferences and training programs to keep abreast of best practice skills in obtaining donation authorization.
