Dietitian - Outpatient Diabetes Educator - Diabetes Institute – Orlando

Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire Outpatient Diabetes Educator who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.



Department Profile:

Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute is located on the Orlando Campus of Florida Hospital. The Diabetes Institute provides a Nationally Recognized Diabetes Patient Education Services at seven of the Florida Hospital campuses and Florida Hospital Waterman. The institute provides comprehensive diabetes education classes as well as specialty individual counseling including insulin pump training and Medical Nutritional Therapy for those diagnosed with diabetes in the Central Florida Region. The Institute also provides an ongoing corporate diabetes care program that includes diabetes



Work Hours/Shifts:

Full time, M-F 8a - 5p, Some evening and weekends



Job Summary:

The Outpatient Diabetes Educator, under general guidance, is responsible for providing age specific diabetes self-management education to patients and healthcare professionals. Provide diabetes education services in a new core delivery model as a health coach for corporate organizations and their employees. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility for maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of applicable local, state and federal agencies and regulatory bodies. Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Dietitian: Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics
  • 1-3 years of experience in field
  • Knowledge of diabetes of diabetes concepts and skills
  • Ability to provide patient teaching in individual and group settings
  • Ability to communicate effectively and organize daily activities
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Power Point and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to work with people of various backgrounds.
  • Ability to work under stress and deadlines.
  • 1 year experience in diabetes specialty (Preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of Diabetes (Preferred)
  • Ability to provide teaching in all aspects of diabetes management (Preferred)
  • Bilingual in Spanish (Preferred)


Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Basic CPR.
  • Licensed in the state of Florida as a Dietitian (Preferred)
  • Certified Diabetes Educator. (Preferred)


Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior Florida Hospital’s Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program

  • Provides self-management instruction in group and individual sessions, in accordance with patient education standards set by the American Diabetes Association, departmental policy through effective application of teaching-learning strategies. Provides assessment and education in all content areas except individualized meal plan calculation for RN or insulin administration, comprehensive insulin pump and sensor training for RD. Includes all required documentation and follow-up. Incorporates special needs considerations when applicable.
  • Establishes individualized learning goals, objectives and educational plan in collaboration with the patient.
  • Evaluates patient upon completion of educational plan and provides remediation as indicated.
  • Provides ongoing health coaching utilizing only approved resources to effectively engage the client.
  • Actively participates and accepts responsibility for special projects such as risk testing, speaker requests, support groups and other community events designed to increase diabetes awareness.
  • Participates in healthcare professional education programs as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department. Orients new staff as necessary.
