You will be responsible for:
  • Complies with Employee Code of Conduct

  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in Emergency Preparedness Program. Participates in Disaster Drills, as appropriate
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Life Safety Program and participates in Fire Drills as appropriate
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Medical Equipment Program and how to report malfunctioning equipment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in the Utility Systems Program and the department’s response to utility failure
  • Follows hospital and departmental Infection Control policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with all team members, patients and families
  • Maintains satisfactory participation and attendance at required and non-required meetings and staff development programs
  • Demonstrates evidence of continuous professional development

  • Attends annual mandatory inservice, required meetings and continuing education

  • Demonstrates evidence of adherence to the hospital confidentiality policy
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform patient assessments/interventions by identifying, physical, psychosocial and developmental needs and adapting interventions accordingly
  • Communicates with parent/guardian regarding care issues and/or concerns per the plan of care (which is based on level of family comprehension, understanding, and readiness to learn)
  • Maintains a safe environment utilizing appropriate equipment and safety devices, based on patients age and level of cognition
  • Performs procedures utilizing approaches and equipment appropriate to patients age and size
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret age specific data and plan and implement care base on interpretation of assessment findings.
  • Supports education by identifying and reporting patient/family responses to information
  • Experience in scrubbing for all operative procedures within the unit specific scope of service
  • Sets up procedure/operating room with correct instruments and supplies for the scheduled case under the direction of the circulating nurse
  • Identifies unsafe or defective instruments/ equipment and implements appropriate actions
  • Verifies completeness of instrument/ sponge/needle count
  • Cleans instruments, equipment and room as appropriate when procedure is completed.
  • Ensures proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needles, sponges and all biohazardous waste
  • Assists the surgeon during surgical procedures under the surgeon’s direction, if able to demonstrate competency
  • Transports patients and medical records to destinations within scheduled time frames observing correct safety techniques
  • Assists in positioning, preparation and draping procedure
  • Assists anesthesiologist during induction of anesthesia
  • Functions as 1st and 2nd scrub during surgical procedures
  • Maintains aseptic technique; recognizes breaks in technique by self or others and takes                 corrective action
  • Assists with accurate identification/maintenance of specimen
  • Performs operative shave prep, scrub, urinary catheterization, CPR or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN if properly trained and experienced in the procedure
  • Provides for the patient needs based upon such factors as diagnosis, age and cultural background. Patient population includes patients of all ages, from newborns through the geriatric population
  • Functions as a Surgical Technician preceptor in orientation and instruction of surgical personnel in conjunction with the Education Department and the Nurse Manager
  • Functions as a resource person for equipment set-up, operation, and maintenance
  • Troubleshoots equipment as needed
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information, including written, verbal and observed
  • Reviews hospital safety, infection control, risk management and biohazardous waste programs annually and as indicated
  • Performs procedures in accordance with standards
  • Conforms to unit dress code
  • Utilizes times productively to accomplish duties in necessary time frame with minimum errors
  • Conforms with unit on-call scheduling policies
  • Minimum of one year scrub experience in a multi-disciplinary surgical services

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • American Heart Association's Basic Life Support certification (BLS)

    • Current Operating Room Technician Certification (CST)
