Department Profile:

Florida Hospital’s Central Processing Department serves 4 separate surgical departments as well as provides high level decontamination and sterilization services to Florida Hospital service lines both inside and outside the physical campus. We provide excellent customer service and are compliant with current AAMI standards. Florida Hospital’s Central Processing Department believes in employee development and is home to the Central Sterile University, where we provide our employees the opportunity to become Certified Central Sterile Technicians.

Work Hours/Shifts:

M-F; 8a-4:30pm

Job Summary:

Under supervision of the Central Service Manager / Director the Supervisor / Educator is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the department’s 24/7 sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection. Completes staff evaluations and manages the disciplinary process for staff with the guidance of the CS Manager/Director. Ensures staffing patterns and monthly schedules meet department needs and are in line with labor tracking standards. Manages and plans the orientation of new employees. Acts as a liaison between Central Services and other hospital departments to ensure availability of instrumentation and equipment as needed for patient care. Responsible for Performance Improvement activities in the department, development of action plans, and follow up with the guidance of the CS Manager/Director Participates in system wide committees related to Sterilization, Decontamination and Disinfection. Plans, organizes, and teaches the training program for Central Service employees system wide to achieve National Certification with the guidance of the CS Manager/Director. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.
  • Knowledge of Sterilization Standards
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of Surgical Instrumentation
  • 5 years previous Central Service experience, Surgical Tech experience, or Operating Room RN
  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Central Service Tech Certification from IAHCSMM or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
  • IAHCSMM approved course instructor (preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans staff assignments for the shift based on Surgery and other procedure area volumes. Prioritizes work throughout the shift to ensure instrumentation and equipment are available as needed. Completes monthly staff schedule and ensures all gaps in staffing are covered. Works in conjunction with the management team to ensure staffing matches workload and that labor standards are achieved. Justifies overtime on a daily basis. Participates in budget review, plans, and development with Management team.
  • Monitors sterilization practices to ensure all standards are met. Keeps accurate records of all sterilizer loads. Utilizes knowledge of sterilization parameters and takes corrective action if parameters are not met. Attends system level committee meetings for Sterilization Standards and practices. Performs departmental rounds to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards. Makes recommendations and assists in development of corrective action plans as needed.
  • Ensures safe work practices for all employees. Monitors staff use of PPE in decontamination area. Promotes a safe environment. Takes appropriate action in emergency situations, demonstrates awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and employees.
  • Monitors work environment to ensure infection control standards are met. Ensures department is cleaned on a daily basis. Monitors environmental controls (temp and humidity, air flow) and takes corrective action as needed. Identifies and reports any other environmental concerns to the management team.
  • Acts as a liaison between all hospital departments that utilize Central Services to ensure needs of the customer are met. Communicates with Surgery staff to ensure instrumentation is available as needed for cases. Collaborates with Materials Management to ensure supplies and equipment are available for patient care units.
  • Develops orientation plan for new employees. Meets with orientee on a weekly basis to assess progress. Works with Department Director/ Manager to plan system courses for Central Service Technician Certification. Reviews applicants for acceptance to program. Teaches course material according to national standards.
  • Completes employee evaluations in an accurate and timely manner. Manages required disciplinary processes with employees and develops action plans as needed. Meets regularly with the Central Service Managers/Leads to assist with any staff or workflow problems.
  • Maintains competency by attending continuing education seminars related to Central Service issues and attending inservices on new equipment and instrumentation in the department. Maintains IAHCSMM instructor status by attending annual instructor updates as required by IAHCSMM.
