Cardiovascular Genomics Counselor – Cardiovascular Services - Orlando

AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Cardiovascular Genomics Counselor who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,368-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. Job Summary:

The Cardiovascular (CV) Genomics Counselor will provide patients and their families with data about the risks of genetically inherited cardiovascular conditions. The counselor will also offer education and counseling to patients and their families regarding the value, risk and benefit of genetic counseling. The CV Genomics Counselor will be working closely with the Medical Geneticist, Cardiologists and Nurse Navigator to conduct outpatient and inpatient visits, implement testing strategies, provide genetic counseling, discuss test results and assist in the coordination of necessary ancillary or consultative services. The CV Genomics Counselor also serves as a resource for patients, physicians and allied professional serving in the role of educator, quality improvement and consultant to patients referred. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and explain moderately complex information to hospital staff with an attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a supportive manner to patients, family, staff and physician
  • Ability to explain information to patients and families in manner that facilitates understanding
  • Ability to communicate timely and in an open and honest manner
  • Ability to observe assess, guide and evaluate others
  • Ability to collect data, interpret findings, set priorities and carry out established plans
  • Flexibility in prioritization; critical-thinking/problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and in a group setting
  • Navigation of Cerner and/or Athena Electronic Medical Record (Preferred)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Preferred)
  • Program Development (Preferred)
  • Master of Science Degree in Genetic Counseling
  • 3-5 years prior experience in genetic counseling (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Certified Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling

Job Responsibilities:

  • CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Collect and analyze family pedigree and patient (pediatric and adult) histories regarding potential CV genetic diseases in both inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Perform genetic risk calculations and educate families about potential health risks.
  • Provide patients and their families with genetic testing and interpret the results.
  • Assist patients to cope with a diagnosis.
  • Develop, plan and implement evidenced-base strategies that increases the quality of care for cardiovascular patient and ensures compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
  • REPORTING TO OTHERS - Maintain the Administrator, Medical Geneticist and Medical Director informed and seek assistance and direction when confronted with unfamiliar procedures and techniques to ensure delivery of safe and effective patient care.
  • Track and monitor program progress/activity with monthly reporting to Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) Administration e.g., volume of patients, referral data, genetic testing/results and source of payment for genetic testing.
  • Meet routinely (or as determined) with Medical Director and Medical Geneticists to review responsibilities, goals and program strategies from a clinical perspective.
  • Meet with Executive Director as needed for all non-clinical program components. Institute satisfaction surveys. Support and assist with data collection for process and quality improvement.
  • WORKING WITH OTHERS - Coordinate with the Nurse Navigator the patient education and additional healthcare needs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care while maintaining a professional relationship with all. Complete assigned work comprehensively and in a timely manner. Develop working relationships to maximize program’s effectiveness and facilitate problem resolution across departmental, campus and physician/provider line.
  • EDUCATING OTHERS - Educate, in a manner that is conducive to understanding, patients; their families; fellow healthcare providers; the AdventHealth administrative team and the population at large regarding Cardiovascular Genetics and Genomics and the impact this service-line brings to the care of population both in the diagnosis and treatment of illness as well as in the early detection or prevention of disease.
