Surgery Supervisor – Surgical Services – Orlando

AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Surgery Supervisor who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,368-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

Department Profile:

Our expanding unit performs over 17,000 procedures a year offering challenging and rewarding work in orthopedics/podiatry, general/GYN, plastics, urology, ENT, dental and more. We possess an extensive minimally invasive program in several specialties using the latest laparoscopic treatment technologies. Currently we have four robots which are used daily for GYN oncology, urology, ENT and general surgeries. Pediatric surgery has expanded to four fully integrated suites that were specially designed to produce optimal outcomes for our pediatric population. We perform heart, lung, liver, kidney (cadaveric or living donor) and kidney/pancreas transplants as part of our very busy transplant program. An OR internship training program, department in-service education programs and a professional practice advancement ladder are offered as well.

Work Hours/Shifts:

Monday – Friday; 7:00am – 3:00pm

Job Summary:

The Surgery Supervisor under administrative guidance is a registered professional nurse who oversees and supervises the quality and continuity of patient care for specific age groups during the shift. The Surgery Supervisor provides guidance in the delivery of care and nursing practice within the clinical unit. The Surgery Supervisor ensures efficient patient and case flow throughout the shift by continually assessing the progress of cases and the staffing levels. The Surgery Supervisor participates in unit employee selection through interviewing and the hiring process. Oversees orientation, training and education of new personnel and ongoing staff development. Assists Leadership with unit budget/cost containment and labor tracking. Assists in the development, implementation and tracking of unit Performance Improvement Metrics and action plans. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Ability to lead the employees of their unit in the delivery of patient care
  • Ability to lead performance improvement initiatives on their assigned unit
  • Ability to think critically in relation to the operations of the unit and delivery of patient care
  • Ability to manage the business of healthcare delivery on their unit
  • Able to assist and mentor other in relation to the technology utilized on the unit
  • Excellent clinical practice knowledge and is able to apply this knowledge to the unit setting
  • Ability to influence relationships and behaviors in relation to meeting the needs of the unit
  • Acts as a role model for professionalism on their assigned unit of employment
  • Specific skills as delineated by the unit of employment (see competencies)
  • Specific knowledge and skills as delineated by the unit of employment (see competencies) (Preferred)
  • Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • 2 years’ experience in the Perioperative setting
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) (Preferred)
  • Prior management experience (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Current valid State of Florida or multi state license as a Registered Nurse
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) per specialty/unit requirements
  • Specialty certification (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Has a working knowledge of performance expectations for all employees on the unit.
  • Monitors performance of the staff and report’s findings to the nurse manager or takes corrective action for improvement as appropriate. Uses independent judgment to make recommendations to supervisor/manager regarding:
  • Applicant selection for interview and input into the hiring process after actively participating in the interview process.
  • The reassignment of employees for the betterment of patient care delivery.
  • Suspension or other discipline (after consultation with HR and/or NM) for work infractions, performance deficiencies and conduct violations by exercising supervisory authority.
  • Periodic evaluations of supervised employees. Recommends promotion of supervised employees, recommends bonuses and awarding of other discretionary rewards to supervised employees.
  • The assignment of employees to particular duties or activities or to authorize and assign overtime to employees where appropriate.
  • The adjustment/resolution of complaints, concerns, and problems of supervised employees regarding work assignments, hours of work overtime scheduling, and other work-related matters.
  • Leads the employees in a manner which develops the employee to their optimal level of performance
  • Mentors and coaches employees on a continual basis in order to assure competency in care delivery. Develops staff preceptors and mentors.

  • Assures workplace safety for the employees and demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements for workplace safety, i.e., CMS, OSHA, DNV, etc.
  • Is supportive of Process Improvement Initiatives by sponsoring and/or participating in the activities.
  • Ensures that practice changes, as a result of performance improvement activities, are implemented.
  • Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department.

  • On a daily basis and throughout the shift, coordinates the continuity of nursing care provided and takes the initiative to ensure appropriate staffing levels and quality of care will be provided. Makes adjustments as needed based on volume and acuity fluctuations.
  • Makes periodic rounds during the shift to ensure efficient progress of cases. Monitors room turnovers and patient flow and assigns support staff as needed to ensure efficiency. Works with PACU Leadership to ensure space availability and maintain throughput. Communicates with Senior Leadership if O.R. is put on hold for PACU bed availability.
  • Collaborates with other departments and disciplines to provide continuity of patient care and promote teamwork. Acts as a liaison between physicians, sales consultants, internal customers and management team with pertinent and ongoing communication. Maintains professional communication during all interactions.
  • Oversees and utilizes labor tracking standard to ensure that the unit staffing assignments are done efficiently according to the schedule/patient caseload. Works with staff to ensure supplies are used appropriately and not wasted. Seeks out opportunities for cost containment.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of department goals, objectives and unit performance improvement process. Demonstrates knowledge of performance indicators and ensures results are communicated and posted in the department.
  • Completes unit personnel performance evaluations as assigned within the specified deadlines. Recognizes staff needs for additional skills and recommends / develops pertinent education plans. Participates in the disciplinary process with staff making recommendations for improvement and development of action plans. Follows up on all educational and disciplinary action plans with staff.
  • Promotes a safe environment: Supervises and initiates appropriate action in emergency situations, demonstrates awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and employees, identifies environmental concerns by conducting routine unit rounds, communicating necessary precautions for the safe environment. Utilizes knowledge of all regulatory standards and develops action plans in conjunction with department leadership to ensure adherence to all standards.
  • Maintains professional competency by participating in continuing education and appropriate learning experiences both internal and external. Attends pertinent conferences and seminars regarding clinical nursing, business, or management. Provides patient care as needed.
