Work Hours/Shift:

PRN Days

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Provides inpatient and outpatient education and support to new parents.
  • Performs daily rounds on new mothers to assess learning needs.
  • Provides breastfeeding assistance and instruction daily as indicated.
  • Provides breastfeeding consults and pump training trials daily as indicated.
  • Provides individual breastfeeding education and assistance to antepartum, postpartum patients, mothers whose baby is in NICU, and patients referred to the Lactation Resource Network.
  • Documents patient’s behavior, responses and progress in Cerner for inpatients and on Lactation Resource Network forms for outpatients.
  • Will contact all discharged patients at 3 days’ post-delivery, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks for breastfeeding mothers.
  • Will conduct follow-up consults as ordered by physician referral and document on Lactation Resource Forms as indicated.
  • Reads current publications on perinatal and childbirth education monthly.
  • Participates in 8 hours of clinical update annually.
  • Documents evidence of a minimum of 15 hours continuing education relevant to lactation practices in addition to completion of all mandatory and educational activities required for licensing requirements.
  • Understands the Computerized Physician Order Entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.
  • Understands computer downtime procedures.
Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and six months to one year related experience and/or training. 
  • Maintain a current certificate in BLS.
  • Maintain a current certificate in NRP or obtain within 3 months of hire,
  • Maintain IBCLC or LC or ICCE as appropriate.
  • Maintain a current RN/LVN license in the state of Texas. 
Job Summary: 

To provide evidenced based family centered education to the childbearing family in the prenatal, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum period.

Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and treats staff, physician, patients and families in accordance with SHARE: Sense, Help, Acknowledge, Respect and Explain.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

•         Will conduct follow-up consults as ordered by physician referral and document on Lactation Resource Forms as indicated.

•         Responds promptly and courteously to all incoming calls within 24 hours following through as appropriate.

•         Serves as a resource person to staff and assists in staff education as appropriate.

•         Responsible for maintaining current educational and informational materials on a daily basis.

•         Exhibits professional behavior

•         Attends all mandatory programs and/in-services.

•         Writes a yearly self-evaluation including personal and professional goals.

•         Maintains or working toward certifications and/or a Graduate degree.

•         Reads current publications on perinatal and childbirth education monthly.

•         Participates in 8 hours of clinical update annually.

•         Documents evidence of a minimum of 15 hours continuing education relevant to lactation practices in addition to completion of all mandatory and educational activities required for licensing requirements.

•         Understands the Computerized Physician Order Entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

•         Understands computer downtime procedures.

•         Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

•         Completes other tasks as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Skills Required:


•         Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

•         Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

•         Effective communication among employees, and between employees, patients, visitors and supervisors is essential to ensure quality patient care and to avoid misunderstanding, errors and miscommunications which could have a detrimental effect on the health, safety and well-being of patients and co-workers.  In addition to these communication and safety concerns, individuals in this position must be able to effectively review patient and related medical records, understand nurse and/or physician verbal and written instructions, read labels of medications and hazardous chemicals.  Therefore, to prevent misunderstandings, errors, and miscommunications in the provision of quality patient care and other job-related services, employees in this position are required to have the capability of fluently speaking, reading, and writing English.

•         Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

•         Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

•         Must have some knowledge and experience in performing the duties associated with labor/delivery, lactation consulting, and perinatal education. 

•         Must have some computer experience, working with a healthcare software computer system is desirable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:


Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and six months to one year related experience and/or training. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

•         A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred.

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  •          Maintain a current certificate in BLS from the American Heart Association
  •          Maintain a current certificate in NRP or obtain within 3 months of hire,
  •          Maintain IBCLC or LC or ICCE as appropriate.
  •          Maintain a current RN/LVN license in the state of Texas.
