Cytotechnologist – Cytology – Orlando

AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Cytotechnologist who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

Job Summary:

The Cytotechnologist performs anatomical pathology procedures as licensed. Requires the exercise of independent judgement under minimum supervision. Work customarily involves procedures, which require a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge, and expertise in licensed area(s). Adheres to the Florida Hospital Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Technical skills related to processing, staining and cover-slipping, including the handling and microscopic evaluation of gynecologic thin layer, irreplaceable fine needle aspirations, and fluid specimens
  • Ability to assist Pathologist, Radiologist, or Endoscopist in the slide preparation and collection of samples for ancillary testing during fine needle aspirate procedures, and perform RAPID on site evaluation of adequacy
  • Knowledge of all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, rules and guidelines such as State of Florida, and related agencies, as well as Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan
  • Read text and numbers, and effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective and professional manner
  • Ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, and problem solve
  • Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with little or no supervision
  • Associate’s degree in Biological Sciences
  • Successful completion of a 12-month Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Cytotechnology program
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biological Sciences (Preferred)
  • One year of experience in a hospital laboratory setting (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Licensed by the State of Florida as a Cytology Technologist
  • Certified as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a CT (ASCP) or International Academy of Cytology (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior AdventHealth’s Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program

  • Performs analytical activities related to: 1) microscopic evaluation and reporting of negative gynecological thin layer slide preparations and 2) microscopic evaluation and formulation of an opinion for the pathologist of abnormal gynecological thin layer, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration slide preparations. Correlate current cases with previous cytologic specimens where indicated.
  • Performs assigned pre-and post-analytical activities related to tests assigned, including specimen collection and processing, quality control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures.
  • Performs and results molecular testing and/or ancillary testing from the ThinPrep vials and correlates with morphologic findings.
  • May assist in collection of data for research or publication of papers. Ability to read and evaluate published professional literature.
  • Supports Cytopreparatory Technicians and Clinical Laboratory staff by providing leadership and mentoring, including resolution to customer service issues within guidelines.
  • Supports cross-departmental partnerships and communication amongst Pathologists, Pathologists’ Assistants, hospital staff and clients taking immediate steps to correct, follow through and report any mistakes or errors to department manager or assistant manager.
  • Participates in and has knowledge of Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of any new procedures and equipment, data collection, and/or creation of various reports and attends and participates in scheduled department and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Adheres strictly to Florida Hospital Compliance Plan and the rules and regulations of applicable regulatory authorities; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times.
  • Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), handwashing and hazardous chemical handling. Utilizes understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene Plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from point of generation to designated secure storage area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
