Clinical Pharmacist – Specialist – Pediatric Pharmacy – AdventHealth for Children – Orlando

AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Clinical Pharmacist – Specialist who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.



Facility Profile:

Since opening our doors in 1908, AdventHealth has offered one of the most comprehensive children’s health programs in Central Florida. Today, we continue this legacy of pediatric excellence at the Magnet® recognized Walt Disney Pavilion at AdventHealth for Children. Our campus is home to 30 pediatric sub-specialties led by a team of 400+ nurses and physicians. We provide specialized care in various state-of-the-art settings, including an 81-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with private family-centered rooms, an Advanced Center for Pediatric Surgery handling nearly 4,000 cases each year, and one of the few pediatric oncology programs in the area. We’re also Central Florida’s only pediatric provider for bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, Gamma Knife services, trilogy radiation and Level III epilepsy care. But perhaps most exciting of all, is that this is the first—and only—hospital to bear the Disney® name.



Department Profile:

The Pharmacy Department is open 24 hours a day and is staffed with approximately 130 employees, including pharmacists, technicians, a medication safety coordinator, inventory control specialists, and an administrative coordinator. The entire pharmacy team works together to assure patients receive the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible. From our central pharmacy and 6 satellite pharmacy locations, we dispense 15,000 doses of medication daily. Through Cerner Millennium CPOE and Pharmacy management system, the Pharmacy processes more than 10,000 orders per day. Pyxis dispensing cabinets help distributes 90% of the medications for administration. The Pharmacy department manages a $55 million-dollar drug budget. Lexicomp serves as the system drug information



Work Hours/Shifts:

M-F, 10 hr shifts, every other weekend; 11:30A-10:00PM



Job Summary:

Primary responsibility is the provision of integrated clinical and distributive pharmacy services, direct patient care, expert experiential pharmacy student and resident training, and leadership of quality improvement and practice advancement initiatives. Proficiently leads direct patient care programs, advanced drug management services, and all medication use systems throughout the institution. Actively provides clinical pharmacy services and participates in multidisciplinary teams to proficiently complete critical medication order scrutiny, drug profile review, and monitoring of patients with a broad range of disease states to identify, prevent, or mitigate medication-related problems. Actively participates in medication safety systems, regulatory compliance initiatives, patient quality services, and disease outcomes programs. Delivers medication therapy management consult services and disease state management services as needed and proactively intervenes in all areas of medication use as appropriate to optimize patient outcomes. Advocates for safe medication use in neonatal and pediatric patients. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

  • Working knowledge of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Accreditation Standards for Pharmacy Residency Programs
  • Ability to lead small groups of people in determining policy, implementing procedures and demonstrating progress
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to define operational or program opportunities/needs and solutions (Preferred)
  • Ability to integrate clinical and distributive pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities (Preferred)

  • Expertise using Pyxis automated dispensing technology (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the accreditation requirements of Det Norske Veritas and International Organization for Standardization quality management systems (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists National Practice Standards (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Guidelines (Preferred)
  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy, or other advanced pharmacy degree required
  • Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) & Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency in specialty area consistent with practice needs of institution or
  • PGY1 Residency plus contemporary pediatric hospital or specialty practice experience (3+ years) consistent with practice needs of institution


Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Current valid State of Florida Pharmacist license
  • Board certification from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (Preferred)
  • Registration as a pharmacist preceptor with the Florida Board of Pharmacy and applicable schools of pharmacy (Preferred)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (Preferred)

  • Pharmacy Operations –
  • Performs all pharmacist functions
  • Maintains functional proficiency in and provides coverage of distributive functions and supervising technicians as requested
  • Ensures appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems
  • Pharmacy Practice –
  • Completes critical medication order scrutiny, drug profile review, and patient monitoring to identify, prevent, or mitigate medication-related problems
  • Ensures age-, weight-, and indication-appropriate medication dosing
  • Intervenes as appropriate on food/drug interactions, drug allergies, and duplicate therapy
  • Proficiently verifies/enters medication orders and proactively communicates with medical staff to resolve problem medication orders
  • Provides patient-centered care services, including accurate, safe and timely medication therapy, and promotes cost-effective drug therapy, including actively participating in antibiotic stewardship activities, intravenous to oral medication conversion, therapeutic interchanges, and restricted medication/surveillance programs
  • Completes pharmacist consults proficiently
  • Performs nutritional assessment and completes metabolic support team consults proficiently
  • Facilitates medication safety practices, including identifying, mitigating, and reporting potential and actual adverse drug events, adverse drug reactions, and medication errors

  • Clinical Pharmacy Services –

  • Works as an active member of pharmacy clinical programs and multidisciplinary teams, collaborates with healthcare providers and pharmacy staff, and places practice priority on the delivery of patient-centered care
  • Provide patient, caregiver, and staff education as needed
  • Maintains evidenced-based expertise in pediatric pharmacy and clinical specialty practice (consistent with national pharmacy training standards) that is aligned with the needs of assigned clinical pharmacy service roles and patient care areas.
